Betel Leaves are an evergreen and perennial herb. It is a heart shaped leaf and belongs to Piperaceae family. Though it is considered as auspicious and used in religious ceremonies in Asian countries, it has many health benefits too. Betel leaves contains high amount of chlorophyll, which makes its juice useful in production of many medicines.   • In cough and cold, betel leaves juice can be taken with honey. It gives relive to patient.
  • Put black pepper, liquorice, cloves over one betel leaves and chew it. It relives sore throat and coughing.
  • In mouth sores, put camphor over betel leaves and chew it, but keep spitting the salivary juice produced in mouth. This cures mouth sores and is even helpful in preventing Pyorrhoea.
  • On chewing betel leaves, the salivary juice produced in mouth is good for digestion.

PRECAUTION WITH ITS USE:

  • Betel leaves qualities are lost when it is chewed with tobacco. Do not chew betel leaves with tobacco, it is injurious to health and can cause cancer.
  • Betel leaves should be chewed only after meals. Chewing it empty stomach could be harmful.
  • It should not be chewed with areca nuts.
  • Using catechu with betel leaves can be destructive for lungs.
  • Betel leaves when chewed with large amount of lime can damage teeth and intestine.
  • Betel leaves can cause gastritis and acidity. It should not be consumed by children and pregnant women.
  • People suffering from dental problems and fever should not consume betel leaves.
  • Excessive consumption of betel leaves is harmful. It causes eye and mouth related diseases.

HOME REMEDIES WITH BETEL LEAVES :

  1. Mix betel leaves juice with honey and make children lick this mixture. It relives dry cough in children.
  2. Juice of betel leaves with honey also relives gas formation and indigestion in children.
  3. People suffering from Night blindness should put drops of betel leaves juice in eyes , for good results.
  4. Juice of betel leaves when warmed and taken 3 to 4 times daily cures dry cough and black cough.
  5. Betel leaves when rubbed in palms removes kerosene oil odour from hands.
  6. Betel leaves juice when mixed with butter milk is useful to cure intoxication with bhang, ganja or liquor.
  7. Betel leaves juice when consumed with double amount of sugar improves digestion and strengthens heart.
  8. Betel leaves with black pepper powder and honey when eaten daily two times a day , improves cough in throat and also relives sore throat.
  9. For dry cough in adults, give celery, Pipal and betel leaves to chew. It gives quick relive.
